Recent Google Docs Updates - Awesome Features to Enhance Student Learning With Documents

Tom Mullaney recent shared this French Revolution study guide. (To use the drop down feature, you need to make a copy.) This guide models the recent/newish Google Docs features. Today I wanted to share a bit more about some of these Google Document updates.

Google has added some awesome features to Google Docs that enhance both design and interactivity. Here is a brief summary of our favorites. We've also created this Google Doc to model some of the features and explore additional details.
  • Insert Drive Files and YouTube Videos Using the “Tab” Key
    • Automatically format links inserted in the document.
  • Transform Emojis in Editable Text Emojis with Noto Emoji Font
    • Create monochrome versions in Google Docs of the Unicode emoji set.
  • Insert Editable Checklists
    • Create checkboxes to mark list items as complete.
  • Insert Dropdowns
    • Create a dropdown lists anywhere in a Google Doc.
  • Insert Mote Audio
    • Add voice comments and audio content to documents.
  • Insert Smart Chips
    • Add tags and features to the document using a quick @ menu.
  • Insert Google Maps Smart Chips
    • Create a map chip in your document by pasting a Google Maps link.
  • Use Table Templates to Create New Tables
    • Table templates allow you to quickly insert new tables from a template design.
  • Pageless Setting (This Doc is “Pageless”)
    • Pageless format allows you to remove the boundaries of a page to create an infinite surface to work on.
  • Emoji Reactions
    • Express your thoughts about document content using emojis.

  1. Thanks for the shout out! I like to say that rather than ask teachers to innovate in other apps such as Expeditions, Google now enables teachers to innovate in their most used app, Google Docs.
