Zoom and Google Hangout/Meet have both become very popular for synchronous remote learning experiences. Synchronous learning definitely has a place as we look for a way to engage students outside of our classrooms, but I also think we need to make sure that we are not relying only on these types of experiences for our students.
Asynchronous learning with videos should also be something we should be leveraging to engage our students. I think one of the best tools to engage students in asynchronous learning is Flipgrid. Flipgrid is a free platform that allows both teachers and students to create and respond to videos in a safe and secure online environment. It also has some awesome features that can make the learning experience fun.
- Flipgrid Shorts - Shorts allows you to use the power of Flipgrid's camera to easily share quick videos with anyone, anywhere!
- Flipgrid Screencasts - Record a screencast of up to 10 minutes in length using Flipgrid Shorts or as a Topic Focus for your students.
- Flipgrid Whiteboard Mode - Show your work by flipping on the new Whiteboard Mode with Live Inking. You can add text, write on the board, and even upload images. Here is an example of using Flipgrid Whiteboard mode and live inking to solve math problems.
The YouVideo Activity could be used as it is written to reconnect with your students or it could be modified slightly with a remote learning emphasis. This brings in a bit of reflective learning as students focus on how learning has changed for them.
If you are new to Flipgrid, need a refresher, or want to dive a little deeper then this page is where I would start.
