Curiosity is a Superpower - Resources to Engage Students in Curious Exploration of the World

I Made It! I never look at a finish line as an ending. I wonder where I will go next? #AlwaysLearning
April 30th, 2023

My challenge for April is to explore something new each day and share what I discover. I didn't let myself or anyone down. One post per day for 30 days! (April Challenge Update Calendar Doc)

My exploration has all about new resources and ideas, so I thought I would finish up the month with some resources connected to curiosity.

Exceptional Spring and Summer PD for Lifelong Learners

Spring is a great time to learn & explore something new!
April 23rd, 2023

If you’ve followed my blog over the last several years, you might remember that I occasionally create challenges for myself to explore, learn, and share what I discover. Last December, I challenged myself to explore 24 Days of Teaching and Learning Resources.

My challenge for April is to explore something new each day and share what I discover. Hopefully, I won't let you or myself down! (April Challenge Update Doc)

Today I signed up for a free course on the Ditch That Textbook, "Creating a Playful Classroom with Jed Dearybury!

I am currently reading The Playful Life: The Power of Play in Our Every Day by Julie Jones and Jed Dearybury, so I am excited to shift my focus to learning more about "The Playful Classroom: The Power of Play for All Ages".

Signing up for this course started me thinking about additional learning opportunities. Today, I wanted to share some online PD courses for educators that are worth exploring this Spring and Summer.

National Poetry Month Resources

April is National Poetry Month, 30 days of celebrating the joy, expressiveness, and pure delight of poetry.

Launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996, National Poetry Month reminds the public that poets have an integral role to play in our culture and that poetry matters. Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world, with tens of millions of readers, students, K–12 teachers, librarians, booksellers, literary events curators, publishers, families, and, of course, poets, marking poetry's important place in our lives. In 2021, the Academy of American Poets looks forward to celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of this annual celebration! (Source)
I work with instructional technology and I teach high school science so I am not a regular user of poetry, but I do love exploring creative works of art. I do think there are many great resources that can be explored by all teachers and students to make connections to poetry. Today I wanted to share some digital poetry resources shared by our LMC Directors, our English Department, and my PLN.

Adobe Creative Education Challenges - April is Creativity Month!

Refresh and renew. Spring is a great time to learn & explore something new!
April 5th, 2023

If you’ve followed my blog over the last several years, you might remember that I occasionally create challenges for myself to explore, learn, and share what I discover. Last December, I challenged myself to explore 24 Days of Teaching and Learning Resources

My challenge for April is to explore something new each day and share what I discover. Hopefully, I won't let you or myself down!

Did you know that March is National Creativity Month? If you've followed me over the years you might also know that creativity is one of the essential skills we practice in my classrooms. Today I was exploring the Adobe Express Twitter feed and I discovered some awesome Adobe Creative Education Challenges for teachers and students.

2022 One Word Graphic Templates

"One word you can focus on every day, all year long… One word that sums up who you want to be or how you want to live."
"It will take intentionality and commitment, but if you let it, your one word will shape not only your year, but also you. It will become the compass that directs your decisions and guides your steps."

There is nothing wrong with New Year's Resolutions, but too often I make resolutions that are just not sustainable. A few years ago I was inspired by my PLN and Jon Gordon's One Word that Will Change Your Life book to shift my thinking about making New Year's Resolutions and shift to the idea of choosing a word as my foundation for the year. Earlier this month I shared my one word activity for students and today I wanted to share my word and some graphic templates that should help students and teachers share their one word for 2022.

12 Days of Google Tips: Tip 11 - Using Focus Time in Google Calendar

Tis the season of giving and I've been inspired by my PLN and a certain holiday song ðŸ˜‰ to share some Google Workspace Tips that I've either discovered or rediscovered in 2021. To be precise, the plan is two share 12 Google tips in addition to any other posts I am inspired to complete during the month of December. I will link other 12 Days of Google posts at the end of each post for your reference.

Today I wanted to share my 11th tip connected to a feature in Google Calendar that has helped me quite a bit to wrap up 2021. Did you know you can set a "Focus time" in Google Calendar?

Women's History Resources

I am no expert on Women's History Month, but I do try to remember to bring a greater emphasis to women in science changing the world during the month of March. I also do my best to be aware of this year round, but March is always a nice reminder.

Today I wanted to share some of the resources my PLN has helped me discover. These resources could obviously be used year round.

My TCEA & IDEAcon Virtual Conference Resources

I've been lucky enough to attend several virtual conferences this school year. I've also been doing my best to learn and grow as an educator on my own. If you are curious, you can learn a little bit more about my professional development journey in this post

This month I am investing much of my professional development time on the TCEA & IDEAcon Virtual Conference. It has been an awesome experience so far and we are only on day 3 at the time of this post. You can learn more about the conference in this post

By the way, it's not to late to sign up for this incredible conference. Conference registration gives you access to an incredible collection of on-demand sessions, live sessions, EdTech vendors, engagement activities and so much more. You can learn more about registration here.

Today I wanted to share my conference resources and activities. My on demand session is connected to Google for Education. I have also been volunteering as a member of the IDEA Conference Team and I've been engaged in the conference hashtags. In addition, I am luck to part of an incredible team facilitating both a Book Study and a Twitter Takeover.

20 EdTech Resources To Engage Students in 2020

20 tools are way too many tools to use regularly, but having a toolbox full of options to choose from is a great resource when you are creating something or having your students create something for learning.

I typically give my students a few tools to use when we are creating and collaborating. The tools listed below work well from my perspective and are student favorites. I've also included a few links in the descriptions that are connected to some of the ways we use these tools.

A Different Kind of Book of the Month - Oscar The Grouch's Debut

Normally I am recommending books written by educators for educators, but this month I decided to share something a bit different. I am adding Oscar's In the Pursuit of Grouchiness to my reading list in April. I love this book for no other reason then the connections it has to my childhood.  If you haven't seen the book know that it is a series of images and quotes about being a grouch. It's not a positive book at first glance, but I think it could be a starting point for some great discussions on being positive. Some of the pages get you thinking about what Oscar might be trying to say and other pages may just make you laugh out loud.

The #ICE19 Conference Experience - The ICE Conference Bookstore and Book Signings

If you are interested in more ICE Tips, please take a moment to explore my other ICE19 Posts

The ICE Conference is a great place to connect with educators, engage in conversations about teaching and learning, and explore the newest EdTech. I love having the chance to make new friends and reconnect with old friends at the conference. It is always an incredible learning experience for me.

This year I am super excited about the ICE Book Store in the Exhibit Hall and the Featured Speaker Book Signings. There is even a rumor that John Orech will be the featured employee of the month at the book store.

I was lucky enough to get a preview of some of the books that will be available and I wanted to share them with my PLN before the conference. Which of these books and authors are you most excited to add to your reading list?
I am sure there will be more great books available at the conference and I also think EdTechTeam will have some of there incredible books for sale at their booth.

Build Your PLN - Join These January Book Studies and Twitter Slow Chat

Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. ― Henry Ford

I am excited to be part of two book studies and twitter slow chats starting this month. Slow chats are a great way for educators to grow as learners. They also support building a diverse PLN.  Will you join me in one or both?

The ISTE EdTech Coaches Network Book Study is starting on January 22nd. The book has some great insights and ideas to support the future of teaching and learning.

The Edtech Coaches Network promotes the development and collaboration of educational technology coaches who support the professional growth of teachers as they use technology to enhance learning.

The book looks at emerging approaches and tools, and incorporates professional educators’ stories of how and why they have implemented each trend, including information on challenges faced and overcome, how to get started and other resources to explore. The book inspires educators to try new approaches with the understanding that they will devise new ways to synthesize, interpret and implement ideas to fit their context, learners and resources.

You can learn more and register for the book study here.

The ISTE Teacher's Education Network Book Study is starting on January 28th. I recently completed the book and it serves as a great read for all educators.

The Teacher Education Network members include higher education faculty teaching in graduate and undergraduate programs, graduate students, K–12 teachers, administrators, information technology specialists, instructional coaches, curriculum specialists, and anyone teaching and conducting research in teacher preparation and instructional technology.

This book challenges the thought that “teaching” begins only after certification and college graduation. Instead, it describes how students in teacher preparation programs have value to offer their future colleagues, even as they are learning to be teachers! This book provides positive examples, helpful tools, and plenty of encouragement for preservice teachers to learn, to dream, and to do.

From their youngest years, our children are innately curious. They explore the world around them through play, imagination, and discovery. They build meaning, they create understanding, and they unabashedly share their learning. It's in this process that they find joy in life and relevance in the world around them. Why, then, do some of our students become disconnected from their learning in school? Where does this natural curiosity go? And how, as educators, can we ensure all of our students experience a meaningful and wonder-filled journey through their education? It s these questions that Trevor MacKenzie, author of the critically acclaimed book Dive into Inquiry, answers in Inquiry Mindset. Co-written with kindergarten teacher Rebecca Bathurst-Hunt, Inquiry Mindset offers a highly accessible journey through inquiry in the younger years. You ll learn how to . . . Empower your learners, increase engagement, and accelerate achievement. Harness the wonderings and curiosities of your students and leverage them into powerful learning opportunities. Cultivate an inquiry mindset both as a teacher and in your students! Adopt an inquiry approach that results in the most authentic and inspiring learning you 've ever experienced!
