One Word to Rule Them All - Welcome to 2024 Student Activity

"History repeats itself, and that's one of the things that's wrong with history." - Clarence Darrow
Success and failure should never be an endpoint. The best learning happens when we build on what we know and reflect on what we need to know better. I always like to welcome my students back after the holiday break with a bit of reflection on the year that was. I also think it is important to revisit successes and failures to help reset goals for the new year.
A few years ago, I read a post about most New Year's resolutions failing before we flip the calendars to February. For this reason, I decided to scrap the long list of resolutions I won’t remember a few weeks from now anyway! The focus is now on choosing just one word as a foundation for the new year.

One word you can focus on every day, all year long… One word that sums up who you want to be or how you want to live. It will take intentionality and commitment, but if you let it, your one word will shape not only your year, but also you. It will become the compass that directs your decisions and guides your steps. (OneWord365)
Today I wanted to share an activity template designed to help students set goals for the 2024 year with a focus on "one word". This activity is inspired by Mike Ashcraft's and Rachel Olsen's book My One Word: Change Your Life With Just One Word

Graphic Templates for 2024 "One Word" Challenges

"One word you can focus on every day, all year long… One word that sums up who you want to be or how you want to live."

"It will take intentionality and commitment, but if you let it, your one word will shape not only your year, but also you. It will become the compass that directs your decisions and guides your steps."
There is nothing wrong with New Year's Resolutions, but too often I make resolutions that are just not sustainable. A few years ago I was inspired by my PLN and Jon Gordon's One Word that Will Change Your Life book to shift my thinking about making New Year's Resolutions and shift to the idea of choosing a word as my foundation for the year.

Today I wanted to share some graphic templates that should help students and teachers share their "One Word" for 2024.

2023 Year in Review - Resources to Explore and Reflect on the Year

Two of my favorite moments each year are when Spotify releases my "Wrapped" and Google releases the "Year in Search". I love both because they encourage me to think about where I've been and look ahead to what's next.

Today I wanted to share one of my yearly passion projects. Starting in mid-December,, I explore and document reviews and best lists to reflect on the year. I then typically connect some of the best to a reflection I will do with my students when we return from Winter Break. I believe reflecting on where we've been is important, so I always welcome back my students to the New Year with several activities connected to the events, stories, and trends from the previous year.

Past years have taught me that these resources are posted from December through the middle of January, so I will update this post as I discover more. Please bookmark this page to come back to see updates to this list.

Artificial Intelligence in Education - Exploring The Tools

What Do Educators Need to Know to Adapt and Use AI to Support All Students?

Educators cannot hide from a growing collection of Artificial Intelligence resources, so the question becomes how can we adapt and use AI to help students learn?

It literally seems like AI is everywhere. I find it in my email, I find it in resources I've used for years and of course, it's mentioned on just about every site connected to teaching and learning.

Today I wanted to share:

  • A collection of AI resources we've explored.
  • Perplexity AI's thoughts about the future of artificial intelligence in education.
  • Some of my thoughts about AI in education. (Best for last?)

Get in the Game - Formative Assessments and Practice with Giant Steps by Pear Deck

It's the not the Destination, It's the journey.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson

I have been doing my best to convince my students that the process of learning matters more than the final product. The idea is that they should focus more on exploring and questioning than getting to the finish line so they just turn something in and be done.

It is not always easy to slow them down, but one thing I've learned is that frequent formative assessments are a great way to slow down and check our learning. I use a variety of formative assessment tools to get this accomplished.

Today I wanted to share a new favorite, Giant Steps by Pear Deck

I want to learn with these educators today, tomorrow, and in the future . . .

This started as a wishlist of some of the conference presenters I would love to see featured at an educational conference. I started building this list after exploring the ISTE 20 To Watch Award list of amazing educators. Now, I think it might be evolving into something more. #LeaveALegacy

"Teaching is more than imparting knowledge; it is inspiring change. Learning is more than absorbing facts; it is acquiring understanding."—William Arthur Ward

Thanks to my PLN for helping with this. No list is ever complete, so please send me a Tweet or Message with additional suggestions. I will continue to update this list until I stop learning! (Hopefully, that means this will grow forever!

Summer Learning Opportunities & Professional Development Resources for Educators in 2023

How will you recharge this summer, but still find the time to grow as a teacher and learner?

We’ve created a list of virtual, self-paced, and in-person learning opportunities to share some opportunities and resources to support lifelong learners this summer.

Exercise for the Brain | End of Year Activity - The Future Belongs to the Curious

I have the unique opportunity to teach a class that is about half graduating Seniors. This means I have 4 days to engage my Juniors after my Seniors check out. We've completed our final projects, but I don't want to just have them sit and prepare for other finals.

Exercise your mind the same as you would exercise your body. Practice healthy mental habits that will help you, empower you, and improve your perspectives. Practice them daily. ― Akiroq Brost

Today I wanted to share an activity we are exploring to wrap up the year. My plan is to get my students to exercise their brains during class, while still allowing time for their other priorities.

Daily Brain Exercises Finish the Year Learning

Feel free to copy/modify if this is something you can use. Let me know if you have questions, suggestions, or ideas in the comments below.

#ClearTheList - May 2023 Teacher Appreciation Classroom Wishlist Challenge

Most teachers love what they do, but sometimes it is nice to feel appreciated. May 7th - May 12th is the official week to appreciate teachers in 2023. I've decided that May will be teacher appreciation month.

There a quite a few great ways to say thank you to teachers. Simple thank you's from students, parents, and colleagues matter a lot. A thank you card is always appreciated.

I want to thank every educator who has made a difference this year. I know it is not always easy, but I believe with all my heart that we are making a difference.

This May, I decided wanted to do something to brighten the day of some amazing teachers. I decided I am going to explore and do my best to share every teacher wishlist that I come across. I know it is not a big thing, but I hope it brightens at least one teacher's day.

I will update this document daily with new wishlist requests. I will also pin a post on my Twitter page where teachers can reply with their wishlists.

Over the weekend I set aside some time to reflect on my IDEAcon notes. I spent the most time exploring some of the ideas and resources shared by Jordyn Zimmerman. Learning about Jordyn and her journey was a highlight of the conference.

As a nonspeaking autistic person who was denied access to effective augmentative communication until she was 18, Jordyn Zimmerman has personal experience challenging the educational status quo, which is featured in the 2021 documentary, This Is Not About Me

This morning I opened my email and one of the first messages was from my friends at We Are Teachers. I subscribe to the "Daily Update - Secondary Edition" and the feature today was "Autism Acceptance (not Awareness) Month".  It seems like the world is trying to tell me something, it's time to explore autism and resources to support neurodivergent learners.

My challenge for April is to explore something new each day and share what I discover. Hopefully, I won't let you or myself down! (April Challenge Update Doc)

I was reflecting on the challenge of creating a new post each day this morning before starting a new exploration and post. I've started and deleted more posts this month than I've published. For a variety of reasons, some of my explorations have not made the cut. This is part of my learning experience.

I also recognize that most of my posts over the past 20 days have focused on EdTech resources teachers can use in the classroom. Exploring EdTech is in my wheelhouse, so that is where I find myself most mornings. I've always been passionate about finding new ways to engage students with educational technology, but it is still a real challenge to find something new each day that I think is worth sharing.

Today I wanted to shift and expand my focus away from EdTech for a bit. The 4 C's have always been the foundation of my teaching philosophy. I believe my content should help students engage in creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. I also believe that I have a responsibility to help my students grow as humans. This means I sometimes need to expand my mindset beyond my content, EdTech, and the 4 Cs.

Long introduction, I know! I'm almost there. (TLDR?)

Today, I decided to explore what it means to be a good human. What human characteristics can we cultivate that make school and the world a better place for all? I started with Google Search. My keywords included empathy, kindness, character, purpose, and optimism. I discovered and explored quite a few posts and great resources and decided to share The Positivity Project today. I know I sometimes need a little more positivity in my life.

Exploring AI for Education

Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” - Ferris Bueller

While artificial intelligence is not new, it's recently jumped to the front of many educators' minds. It likes wildfire. I don't remember the last time if ever that there was so much to explore in so short of a time.

I am amazed!
I am excited!
I am curious!
I am unsure!
I am even a little afraid!

The future is uncertain and it's probably going to be a bumpy ride at times, but I believe that AI will become a valuable tool in my teaching and learning toolbox. I am writing this post to share my explorations connected to AI. My plan is to continue to add resources and ideas as I continue to learn. I am going to focus on sharing the positive because I don't think we can hide from AI.

National Poetry Month Resources

April is National Poetry Month, 30 days of celebrating the joy, expressiveness, and pure delight of poetry.

Launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996, National Poetry Month reminds the public that poets have an integral role to play in our culture and that poetry matters. Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world, with tens of millions of readers, students, K–12 teachers, librarians, booksellers, literary events curators, publishers, families, and, of course, poets, marking poetry's important place in our lives. In 2021, the Academy of American Poets looks forward to celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of this annual celebration! (Source)
I work with instructional technology and I teach high school science so I am not a regular user of poetry, but I do love exploring creative works of art. I do think there are many great resources that can be explored by all teachers and students to make connections to poetry. Today I wanted to share some digital poetry resources shared by our LMC Directors, our English Department, and my PLN.
